home operations NON-RECOVERY Throughout their history, spanning over 98 years, coke has been produced at both Corrimal and Coalcliff sites using non-recovery technology. This technology was acknowledged by the USEPA in developing the Clean Air Act 1990 Amendments for establishing coke oven emission standards for all new coke plants. Non-recovery technology is where all volatile matter is combusted rather than recovered. The basic coking process is the carbonization of coal which involves the heating of the finely ground coal to a high temperature in an atmosphere of restricted oxygen. Volatiles are given off and burned up in the high temperatures of the flues. The coal gradually transforms into coke, a strong, porous, cellular state of about 85% carbon. The coke produced by both Coalcliff and Corrimal Cokeworks is used in steelworks, foundries and smelters.
