home environmental commitment ILLAWARRA
COKE COMPANY’S ENVIRONMENTAL The Illawarra Coke Company (ICC) is totally committed to the responsible operation of both its Coalcliff and Corrimal Cokeworks in a way that consistently meets the standards set by government and expected by nearby communities. Cokemaking is an industrial process that has an inherent potential to create environmental issues. This, combined with the huge increase in the number and proximity of houses - particularly to Corrimal Cokeworks - has caused some environmental concerns to emerge. ICC, in recognising these concerns, has devoted considerable resources to overcoming any impacts on the community from its cokemaking operations. In New South Wales (NSW), Australia, cokemaking is known as a scheduled activity. This means the cokeworks' operate under a licence issued by the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water NSW (DECCW). This licence specifies some of the particular control measures that ICC employs to manage potential environmental issues and the company continues to work closely with the NSW DECCW. ICC's commitment starts with ICC's Environmental Policy in which all staff members have been trained. In addition to the role of all staff, ICC employs professionally qualified individuals who are dedicated to environmental management.
